Fibroids

What are fibroids?

The expansion of intramural fibroids may cause your womb to stretch. Fibroids are abnormal growths that form in or on the uterus of women. These tumors can occasionally grow extremely large, resulting in severe abdominal pain and heavy periods. Other times, they have no noticeable effects at all. They are usually noncancerous. There is no known cause of fibroids.

The following names are also used to describe fibroids.

- Leimyomas
- Myomas
- Urinary myomas
- Fibromas

According to the Office on Women's Health, up to 80% of women have them by the age of 50. Most women, however, don't have any symptoms and might never be aware that they have fibroids.

What are the different types of fibroids?

The kind of fibroid a woman experiences varies on were it grows. Either inside or outside of the uterus.

Intramural fibroids

The most prevalent kind of fibroids are those that are intramural. These varieties manifest themselves within the uterus's musculature. The expansion of intramural fibroids may cause your womb to stretch.

Subserosal fibroids

The expansion of intramural fibroids may cause your womb to stretch. Subserosal fibroids form on the outside of your uterus, which is called the Serosa. They may grow large enough to make your womb appear bigger on one side. Subserosal tumors can develop a stem, a slender base that supports the tumor. When they do, they're known as Pedunculated fibroids.

Cervical fibroids

Although fairly uncommon, cervical fibroids, also known as cervical leiomyomas, are benign tumors that grow within the uterus close to the cervix. Cervical myomas account for one to four percent of all uterine fibroids types.

Submucosal fibroids

Cervical myomas account for one to four percent of all uterine fibroids types. These types of tumors develop in the middle muscle layer, or myometrium of your uterus. Submucosal tumors aren't common as the other types.
