Female Genital Hygiene - What you need to know

Genital Hygiene

Genital hygiene refers to the practices and measures taken to clean, care for, and maintain the health of the external genitalia (reproductive organs). This can include regular washing, avoiding harmful substances and products, and taking steps to prevent infections or other issues that can impact genital health. In cases where genital hygiene is not ensured, microorganisms multiply rapidly in this region and cause infections of the reproductive system. When these infections are left untreated, they can lead to many health problems. In particular, the susceptibility to infection in this region is increasing due to a lack of knowledge and misbehavior about it.

Why Is Maintaining Vaginal Hygiene Important?

For the sake of avoiding infections and other issues, the vagina should be clean and dry.  The vagina should be clean and dry to prevent infections and other problems. Having a vaginal discharge which is a white or clear substance coming out of the body, is a common thing and there is nothing strange about it. It is best to consult a doctor if it has unusual colors or an unpleasant smell.

How to keep your vagina clean

  • It is essential to keep the genital area dry and clean.
  • Instead of sitting or bathing in the tub, take a standing shower.
  • Vaginal douching should be avoided to preserve the vaginal flora.
  • Both before and after using the restroom, hands should be washed.
  • Clean water should be used to wash the genital region from front to back.
  • Deodorant, spray, perfume, and powder should not be used to clean the genital area if they could trigger allergic reactions.
  • It is best to wear cotton underwear that is non-squeezing, well-ironed, and well-rinsed, and underwear should be changed daily.
  • It is best to wear cotton underwear to allow for genital ventilation.
  • Underwear should be cleaned with hot water and soap whenever possible.

In conclusion, genital hygiene is an important ritual that must be taught to everyone. It is essential to maintain good genital hygiene to keep the body clean and free from harmful germs and bacteria. Regular washing of the genitals ensures that the genital organs are clean and stay healthy. There are certain types of bacteria that are normally found in the genital area. They are harmless and are in fact important for maintaining the skin in a healthy state. However, an excess build-up of bacteria due to inadequate washing of the genitals can harm the skin and eventually lead to various health-related issues.
