10 Essential Tips for Proper Feminine Hygiene Every Woman Should Know

Tips for proper feminine hygiene

1. Wash your vagina every day

Personal hygiene is essential for everyone, but it is especially important for teenage girls as their bodies go through significant changes during puberty. Vaginal discharge and increased sweat from sweat glands, combined with getting your period, make it crucial to keep your intimate area clean. Washing your vaginal area daily with warm water is the first step towards proper feminine hygiene.

2. Wash the outside of your vagina only

The vagina is a self-cleaning organ and has its mechanism to keep itself clean. The internal part of the vagina does not require scrubbing, washing, or douching. In fact, these practices can disrupt the natural bacterial balance in the vagina, leading to infections. So, it's best to focus on cleaning the outside of the vagina, which is called the vulva. The vulva includes the inner and outer vaginal lips and the clitoris.

3. Try pH-balanced feminine washes

Ordinary soaps and shower gels are designed for the skin and have a pH level of around 5.5. However, the healthy vaginal pH level ranges from 3.8 to 4.5. Using regular soap or shower gel can disturb the pH balance of your vagina, leading to infection or irritation. It is best to use special washes designed for use in your intimate area, which is pH-balanced to prevent any harm to the vagina.

4. Avoid using gloves or sponges to wash your intimate area

Female hygiene doesn't require any special equipment. Gloves, sponges, and loofahs can be abrasive and irritate the sensitive skin of the intimate area. Additionally, these objects tend to accumulate bacteria, which can cause infections. So, it is best to avoid using such equipment and use only water and feminine wash to clean the area.

5. Use a soft towel to dry the area

After washing your intimate area, use a soft towel to pat yourself dry. Avoid using rough towels, which can irritate the skin. Changing your towel every two to three days to maintain good personal hygiene is also essential.

6. Don’t point water directly at your vagina

When cleaning your intimate area in the shower, make sure not to aim the stream of water directly into your vagina. Direct water flow can introduce bacteria into the vagina and lead to infections. Instead, let the water run down from the top of your pubic area over your vagina.

7. Wipe front to back

This is an important hygiene tip for women to follow when going to the bathroom. Always wipe from front to back after using the toilet, never back to front. Doing so ensures that no harmful bacteria from your anus get into your vagina, leading to infections like urinary tract infections (UTIs).

8. Wear cotton underwear

Cotton underwear is a breathable fabric that allows excess moisture from sweat or discharge to evaporate, preventing bacteria from growing and unpleasant odors. It's best to wear cotton underwear to maintain good personal hygiene, especially in hot weather or during exercise.

9. Wear a pantyliner

Wearing a pantyliner daily can help absorb vaginal discharge and keep you feeling clean and dry. It is healthy to have discharge, which is the body's way of cleaning and moisturizing the vagina. But, wearing a pantyliner can help prevent discomfort from wet underwear and maintain good personal hygiene.

10. Drink plenty of water

Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining overall health and keeping your body hydrated. It also helps to flush out toxins from your body, which is crucial for maintaining vaginal health. Drinking sugary drinks can disturb the bacterial balance in your vagina, so it's best to drink
